Its never too late to learn Spanish

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I am excited that the curriculum we (Viva Spanish!) put together for a Spanish 1 Conversation class was right on target for the adult group. I observed the class last eve at Lakeland Comm. College in Kirtland, Ohio where 12 adults really engaged themselves in learning Spanish. Each wanted to learn Spanish for various reasons. One couple was there to learn because they traveled often to Mexico and another because she worked in healthcare and still another because he worked in the county court system and often had the desire to better communicate with Hispanics.

Many of the students in the class commented that they were surprised at how much fun the class was. They wondered why it wasn’t this fun in high school. The class focuses on communication and shortcuts to Spanish. The goal of the class is to “converse” and adults want to see results quickly and feel that they are progressing. The 2 hour class is held once per week and the teacher presents a weekly challenge rather than homework to “use your Spanish whenever you can before we meet again.” Even though “earlier is better” it’s never too late to challenge yourself to learn another language. And it can be really fun too.

Students speak out – why learn Spanish?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

We posed the question to 4th grade students at St. Mary Elementary School in Chardon, Ohio. Here are some of the most notable responses:

  • It is important to learn a different language because if you go to a certain job sometimes you need to know two languages and if you go to a different country you need to know a different language and for the last part its fun to learn a different language (We’re glad it’s fun!)
  • It is good to learn two languages because if you go to that country you will know what they are saying. Also, you would be able to communicate with more people. That’s why it’s good to learn two languages.
  • English does not have to be the only language I speak. If I learn another language, like Spanish, I can talk to my friend Andrea, in Spanish. Learning a different language will help me learn about another culture. I think learning another language will be fun!!

MY FAVORITE RESPONSE

  • It is good to speak two languages because if somebody else is Spanish you can ask them, “Can you hand me that pineapple please?” Another reason is if you miss the safety rules on a ride at Disney World in English, you can listen to it in Spanish. (I never thought of that one!)

Spanish Summer Camps in Greater Cleveland

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

For the first time ever, we are introducing Spanish summer camp programs to the Greater Cleveland area for preschoolers and grade schoolers 1-4.  I have seen them offered around the country but never really around here.  Many schools and community centers have agreed to offer the programs and you can email me at gbreilly@vivaspanish.com  to see if a program is available in your area.

We are developing the programs with the objective to develop/maintain interest in Spanish language and culture in children.  The camps will be active and engaging and campers will go home with all their completed projects as well as supplemental materials to help him/her learn and reinforce the Spanish language!

The camps will be two one- week programs in June and can you can register for one or both weeks Mon-Thurs mornings.
We can come to your area!  Just let me know.

Introducing our new Viva Spanish blog

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Welcome to our new blog. It’s no secret that Spanish is growing in need and function in the USA. Think about how common it is to see and hear Spanish everywhere you turn. We believe that learning Spanish helps you communicate with more people, stimulates your brain and encourages acceptance toward diversity.
