Learn Spanish Meetup Groups coming soon

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

If you have attended our Adult Spanish classes (and even if you haven’t), listen up! We are assisting in the development of Learn Spanish Meetup groups intended to help adult Spanish language learners hone their conversational skills. There will be locations on the East and West sides of Cleveland that will begin by March 2012 according to plan. A facilitator will maintain an agenda/curriculum that will help to keep the group on track and there will be a small fee to attend. Please get on our email list to receive updates on these groups – info@vivaspanish.com.

What you already know about Spanish

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Because English and Spanish share many words of Latin origin, you will already be able to recognise more than 3,000 Spanish words!

For example, most English words ending in -tion end in -ción, e.g.
atención, publicación, liberación

There are also loan words in English of Spanish origin, including tornado, bonanza or patio. In addition, you’ll find many familiar American place names, dating back to the times of the Conquistadors: Los Ángeles, city of angels, Las Vegas, the dales, Nevada, snowy land, Florida, flowery and, yes, Amarillo, the Spanish for yellow.

The BBC – UK has a great website for Spanish beginners. http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/guide/facts.shtml

Dia de los muertos is fascinating

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Dia de Los Muertos is one of those fascinating holidays, often misunderstood, but a happy time for those who celebrate it. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to be in Oaxaca, Mexico during the celebration which lasts 15 days. I saw altars, paper mache skeletons and processions with beautiful yellow flowers. I wandered into a cemetery in a small village and was enthralled by the site: all of the tombstones were decorated with pictures, flowers and trinkets. Each grave had a candle burning which I was told was to remain lit for the 15 days. Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and candy skulls were everywhere. I loved the experience!
