Spanish was Spoken at the First Thanksgiving?

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Even my Latino family was intrigued when I presented this to them at our Thanksgiving this year. It makes sense though when you think about it – St. Augustine is the oldest city in America and it was founded by the Spanish. It stands to reason that since the Spanish were in America first that they were the first to share a meal with the Native Americans. I wonder what the real first Thanksgiving meal was? Here’s an article I found to back me up -http://alturl.com/zcd2h

La Hora Loca – The Crazy Hour

Monday, April 25th, 2011

I am so surprised that being Latina I have never known about this “crazy and fun” tradition! I attended surprise party for my Tio (uncle) from Venezuela last Saturday night in Ft. Lauderdale FLA. Did we have fun! There was live Latin music and great food. Then about 2 hours into the party the energy shifted to “wildness”! Hosts gave out light up eyeglasses, glow sticks, a variety of hats and blinking head gear. The music cranked up into salsa, meringue, bachata, and other Latin music forms. People young and old danced and traded their props. Great picture opps and just crazy. It wasn’t until the next day that I realized that this was not unique to this party but a long standing tradition for Latin parties. I even found some You Tube videos under La Hora Loca http://bit.ly/gSD8ZF .

I am posting some pics and videos on my fan page. Check them out! http://on.fb.me/fthSjg

Spanish Meetup stirs up attitudes

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Last week, our Spanish meetup group met at a local Mexican restaurant for the sole purpose of practicing Spanish.  We had natives of  Venezuela and Ecuador attend along with ”gringos” interested in chatting it up in Spanish.  The local regional newspaper reporter came along with a photographer to learn about our group.  I welcomed the publicity because it would be a way to get the word out about our group and encourage more participation.  Well, it worked because we have added 7 new members as a result!

What I never expected was the barrage of negative comments posted online as a result of the front page article.  Many of the comments related to the immigration issues and attitudes about Latinos in America.  It opened my eyes to the predjudices that exist.  It also reinforced my mission at Viva Spanish!  Learning another language helps to open yourself up to learning about other people and cultures and helps to influence acceptance and appreciation toward diversity. It is important to learn about other people and cultures as a pathway to opportunities and growth.  Read article http://news-herald.com/articles/2010/06/04/news/nh2591476.txt
